The document below is part of a codebook for WRA 26. The War Relocation Authority (WRA)26 was a questionnaire of all Japanese immigrants and Japanese Americans (citizens) interned during WWII. My parents, their families, and virtually everyone I know (who is Japanese American) is listed in the WRA 26 files. The federal government collected demographic information about the intenees, including religion. Below is a list of Buddhist sects used for coding information onto a machine readable data tape.
Given the extremely xenophobic times, I found it interesting the WRA knew the breadth of sects of Buddhism. The list of sects was compiled by Rev. Chapman, a minister who spent time in Japan.
Those in the know will recognize some of the below temples…. including for example, Kennin-ji (Kyoto) where Dogen did some of his training.
