early am.....

There are 150+ encampments along the SL river in Santa Cruz. Its discouraging.

This morning, a man with his shorts around his ankles is in the center divide of ocean st, yelling, at no one in particular. In the early am, seems like its just early commuters on the road while the unhoused are wandering around. Thirty+ years ago when I moved to Santa Cruz, different times. Sure, some homeless people… but not like this.

Between man with pants around ankles, tents in the am mist, I saw this in front of me. Who doesn’t smile when Totoro appears?

times passes swifty...

It has been a minute or so.

What is there to say I ask myself.

Race matters are now more polarized than ever…. and like a good Buddhist, I say its all interconnected. interconnected to what? long term changes that most ordinary people have not been thinking about. and short term narratives blame right wing resentment, liberal attempts to fix things, and point fingers at organizations and individuals. To be sure, there is culpability there. Also, lets not minimize long standing, seething about the 50 year period of a) flat or declining wages, b) housing markets c) decline in public education opportunities, d) climate changes wrought in and through governments, institutions, regional economies, food markets, etc.

i live near the coast… wow. And the many fires in CA are a reminder that living within 4-5 miles of the coast adds a layer of protection from wildfire.

Back to race. The discursive is so important…. mostly we point to material and felt conditions, like jobs, markets, houses. All important. But when the discursive part is entangled so much so that we cannot converse, then, things are difficult to mend.
